A Little History Before Choosing A Dinosaur Halloween Costume

In 1842, an English paleontologist, Richard Owens coined the word dinosaur. The word is derived from the Greek words “deinos” meaning terrible, powerful and “sauros” meaning lizard. In the first half of the twentieth century, most of the scientific community thought dinosaurs to be unintelligent, cold blooded creatures. However, much research done since the 1970’s indicates that dinosaurs were active animals with the ability of having many social interactions.

As we know, some dinosaurs were herbivores while others were carnivores. There are over 9,000 species of animal and bird dinosaurs. Although we tend to think of them as large in size, the majority were human-sized or even smaller. Fossils have been found on every continent and were first recognized in the early nineteenth century. Since then dinosaur skeletons have become major attractions at museums all over the world. They have been featured in best selling movies, think Jurassic Park, as well as featured in best selling books.

It is no wonder that the creation of dinosaur halloween costumes would follow suit. When my children were younger, you had to basically create a costume as finding a dinosaur costume wasn’t easy to come by. These days finding a T-Rex, stegosaurus, triceratops or even a pterodactly costume isn’t hard to do – especially online. Then there is the cartoonish type of costumes like good, old Barney. You can even find a baby costume should you so desire.
